Who are we?
Gardenvale Conference and Brighton Conference are St Vincent De Paul Society Victoria (Vinnies Victoria) volunteer-run groups (known as ‘conferences’) within the Brighton parishes of St James and St Joan of Arc, providing practical and personal support to people requiring assistance in the local area; Gardenvale Conference also supports Elwood and St Kilda West.

How do we give a hand up?
Ordinarily, we assist people in their homes with food, supermarket vouchers, pharmaceutical needs, and expenses related to education, utility bills, furniture, whitegoods to vulnerable people and families in our local community. This is undertaken by volunteers in pairs and known as ‘home visitation’ – our core ‘Good Works’.

Due to the social distancing directive from the federal and state governments during the COVID-19 pandemic our volunteers are currently conducting all interviews over the phone and delivering food hampers to the door and/or food and Vinnies Shop vouchers in the mail box.

We also still advocate with legal and government bodies on behalf of people we assist.

Our conferences also support ‘twin’ conferences in India and Myanmar with small grants.

Are we government funded?

How do we raise funds to support our work?

  • Funds from sales at the Vinnies Hampton Shop.
  • Vinnies Victoria’s annual Winter and Christmas appeals.
  • Vinnies Victoria’s annual fundraising campaign the Vinnies CEO Sleepout.

We also receive donations from parishioners and food donations from our local schools (Star of the Sea College, St Joan of Arc and St James).

All our work is undertaken by volunteers and we are always looking for volunteers. Please contact the parish office on 9593 1703 if you are interested.

If you or someone you know requires assistance please call Vinnies Victoria’s Welfare Assistance Line on 1800 305 330.
